Contact Senator Richard Burr, incoming Intelligence Chair, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burr.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Contact.ContactForm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Suggested talking points:<br \/>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"emphasis\">Torture is a moral issue.\u00a0 Exposing it is not smearing Bush &#8212; there is blame to go around.\u00a0 Torture is always wrong.<\/li>\n<li class=\"emphasis\">Opposition to torture should unite Republicans and Democrats.<\/li>\n<li class=\"emphasis\">Release the full report and help us address North Carolinas role.\u00a0 All the survivors and families of victims deserve justice!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"emphasis\">Write letters-to-the-editor.\u00a0 This is the time to keep pushing!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"PageID\">Background:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"emphasis\">At least 18 of the 34 rendition survivors and victims transported for the CIA by Aero Contractors were named in the Senate report, validating what we have contended since 2005 that North Carolina is deeply involved.\u00a0 Yet the words &#8216;North Carolina&#8217; appear nowhere in what was released on Dec. 9.\u00a0 The CIA and perhaps other government entities maintained vital rendition infrastructure in our state for many years.\u00a0 Our public airports functioned as aviation hubs to transport incapacitated detainees to secret prisons where they were held indefinitely and interrogated under often-brutal torture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"emphasis\">The names of 119 CIA detainees appear in Appendix 2 of the summary, and we learned some of those names for the first time on Tuesday.\u00a0 Yet other survivors of CIA extraordinary rendition are not on the published list, including:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"emphasis\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/global-rendition\/the-detainees\/abou-elkassim-britel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abou ElKassim Britel<\/a>, an Italian citizen of Moroccan descent rendered by the CIA for torture in Morocco<\/li>\n<li class=\"emphasis\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/global-rendition\/the-detainees\/abdel-hakim-belhadj-&amp;-fatima-bouchar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fatima Bouchar and Abdel Hakim Belhadj<\/a>, held in the CIA\u2019s Thai black site and one of two dissident Libyan families rendered to Libya by the CIA and MI6<\/li>\n<li class=\"emphasis\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/the-cia-must-tell-the-truth-about-my-rendition-at-12-ye-1616583709\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Khadija al Saadi<\/a>, daughter of Libyan dissident Sami al-Saadi, rendered with her family at age 12 by the CIA and MI6 from Hong Kong to Libya<\/li>\n<li class=\"emphasis\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/global-rendition\/the-detainees\/ahmed-agiza-&amp;-mohamed-el-zari.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ahmed Agiza and Mohamed el-Zery<\/a>, two Egyptian asylum-seekers rendered by the CIA from Sweden to torture in Egypt<\/li>\n<li class=\"emphasis\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/global-rendition\/the-detainees\/maher-arar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maher Arar<\/a>, a Canadian engineer who was rendered by the U.S. for torture in his native Syria<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"emphasis\">Out of 34 known named survivors and victims of CIA rendition who were transported by Aero Contractors, the CIA&#8217;s Smithfield-based aviation service, 16 do not appear in the released portion of the Senate report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"emphasis\">As the international human rights organization Reprieve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reprieve.org.uk\/press\/cia-torture-report-a-good-start-but-child-victims-of-rendition-absent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commented<\/a>, &#8220;This is a good start, but it is far from the whole picture.\u00a0 The names of many victims of rendition and torture are absent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"emphasis\">Can we expect that incoming Senate Intelligence Chair Richard Burr (R-NC) will act for torture transparency?\u00a0 When asked if he saw any kind of follow-up to the report, Sen. Burr told McClatchy, &#8220;No.\u00a0 Put this report down as a footnote in history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"emphasis\">Sen. Burr also called the report &#8220;a blatant attempt to smear the Bush administration&#8221; and &#8220;flawed, biased, and political in nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><a name=\"apologize\"><\/a>Taking Responsibility for Extraordinary Rendition and Torture: The Case Of Abou ElKassim Britel<\/h2>\n<p class=\"emphasis\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ncstn.org\/Images\/Britel97.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Abou Elkassim Britel in 1997\" width=\"160\" height=\"186\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" \/>Since September 11, 2001, more than 135 people have been seized, abducted and tortured as part of the U.S. extraordinary rendition program. Abou ElKassim Britel is one of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Head16ki\">&#8220;The wrong has been done, sadly. What I can ask now is some form of reparation, so that I can have a fresh start and try to forget, even if it won\u2019t be easy &#8230; I want an apology; it is only fair to say that someone who has done something wrong must apologize.&#8221; \u2013 Abou ElKassim Britel<\/p>\n<p class=\"emphasis\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ncstn.org\/Images\/Brietl2011.jpg\" alt=\"Mr. Britel Portrait taken 2011\" width=\"160\" height=\"214\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" \/>Most recently, as repuplished in early October\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/2014\/10\/13\/243067\/unc-legal-team-rights-advocates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">editions<\/a> of the Raleigh News &amp; Observer and the Charlotte Observer, Britel wrote to reporter Renee Schoof with the Washington bureau of McClatchy newspapers:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Head16ki\"><i><b>&#8220;I would like recognition of the injustice I went through &#8230; (m)y honor and my dignity have been violated. I was deprived of family and freedom, or a future and career.
