{"id":1016,"date":"2021-12-20T12:52:12","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T17:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncstn.org\/content\/?p=1016"},"modified":"2022-06-08T07:00:14","modified_gmt":"2022-06-08T11:00:14","slug":"raleigh-vigil-to-close-guantanamo-jan-11-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncstn.org\/content\/2021\/12\/20\/raleigh-vigil-to-close-guantanamo-jan-11-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Raleigh Vigil to Close Guantanamo &#8211; Jan. 11, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>President Biden, close Guantanamo now!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>January 11 vigil in Raleigh to commemorate 20 years since the opening of Guant\u00e1namo prison<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHEN:<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;Tuesday, January 11, 2022, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHERE<\/strong>:&nbsp; The Federal Building at New Bern Avenue and Person Street in Raleigh<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SPONSORS (list in formation):<\/strong>\u00a0 NC Stop Torture Now; NC Council of Churches; Eisenhower Chapter 157, Veterans for Peace; ACLU of North Carolina; NC Peace Action; Libertarian Party of NC; Libertarian Party of Wake County; Carolina Peace Center<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January&nbsp;11, 2022, the shameful prison at Guantanamo Bay will have been open for 20 years.&nbsp; This vigil is a call on the Biden Administration for prompt action to close it.&nbsp; January 11 will also be a sad memorial to the longevity of the prison, a travesty of justice where 39 Muslim men still languish, all having been tortured, many entirely innocent, and many now with serious health problems.&nbsp; Guantanamo remains a symbol of torture and racism, and a huge stain on our country\u2019s conscience.&nbsp; With its &#8220;forever prisoners&#8221; who face no criminal charges but are to be held until they die, the&nbsp;prison undercuts US credibility in advocating for human rights anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Raleigh January 11 vigil will join those in other cities across the U.S.&nbsp; NCSTN is active in the national Close Guant\u00e1namo Coalition, which includes Amnesty International, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Witness against Torture, 9\/11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Public Citizen, CodePink, National Religious Campaign against Torture, and others.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope to see you in Raleigh on January 11!&nbsp; Please bring a mask to wear.&nbsp; If you have a black hood, that\u2019s even better.&nbsp; Orange jumpsuits are also very welcome.&nbsp; Please come and bring family and friends! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Biden, close Guantanamo now!
