Photograph by Cliff Owen\/AP in the Guardian.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The only ex-CIA officer to suffer consequences for the U.S. torture program comes to\u00a0North Carolina Oct. 27-29, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>John Kiriakou is a former high-ranking CIA counter-terrorism officer and the first U.S. official to confirm the CIA was torturing its detainees by waterboarding them. As a whistleblower, Mr. Kiriakou served nearly two years in a Federal correctional facility. \u00a0 Read more of Mr. Kiriakou&#8217;s story at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnkiriakou.com\/\">his website<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"http:\/\/ncstn.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Kiriakou-Bio.pdf\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In April 2015, Mr. Kiriakou <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/this-is-the-wrong-guy-former-spy-reveals-cia-debate-over-arrest-torture-of-maher-arar\/article23799416\/\">exposed the controversy<\/a> within the CIA over the U.S.&#8217; secret detention and rendition to torture in Syria of Canadian citizen Maher Arar. In September, it was announced that Canadian authorities <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2015\/09\/01\/rcmp-to-charge-syrian-in-maher-arar-torture.html\">have brought criminal charges<\/a> against a Syrian official for Mr. Arar&#8217;s torture.<\/p>\n<p>Later this fall, Mr. Kiriakou <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/act-four\/wp\/2015\/08\/20\/propublica-and-john-kiriakou\">will receive<\/a> the prestigious First Amendment Award from PEN Center USA, the writers organization.
