Photo \u00a9 Jerry Markatos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 250 people turned out to hear Mr.\u00a0Kiriakou Oct. 29\u00a0at NCSU. \u00a0 The majority were undergraduate students, and many of them had to\u00a0sit on the floor or stand. \u00a0 Many lingered afterward to speak to Mr. Kiriakou, who sold out of his book,\u00a0<em>The Reluctant Spy<\/em>. \u00a0The standing-room-only event was organized by the NCSU School of Public &amp; International Affairs, \u00a0the NCSU Political Science Department, and NC Stop Torture Now.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Oct. 29, John spoke to about 60 people at the Peace &amp; Justice Forum in NCSU&#8217;s Talley Student Center.\u00a0 Many in the audience\u00a0were members of the NCSU University Scholars, \u00a0an undergraduate honors program. \u00a0John also interacted with faculty and graduate students at a coffee hosted by the NCSU Political Science Department.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/wunc.org\/post\/formerly-incarcerated-cia-whistleblower-continues-speak-out\">appearance<\/a> on the NPR affiliate WUNC&#8217;s acclaimed show &#8220;The State of Things,&#8221; an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/state-politics\/article42006576.html\">article<\/a> in the News &amp; Observer, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/opinion\/opn-columns-blogs\/ned-barnett\/article42085635.html\">column<\/a> by the N&amp;O&#8217;s editor Ned Barnett were among the media highlights of Mr. Kiriakou&#8217;s successful tour. \u00a0He received widespread appreciation\u00a0as a hero for his courage in publicly acknowledging the U.S. torture program and enduring\u00a0the high price that he and his family have paid. \u00a0An example is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/opinion\/letters-to-the-editor\/article43489218.html\">this letter-to-the editor<\/a> of the News &amp; Observer by Curt Torell.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Carolina was ready for the message about truth, fear, and torture that whistleblower John Kiriakou brought on his five-city tour.
