On Feb. 4, 2019, three Johnston County Commissioners received hard copies of the September 2018 report “Torture Flights” by the NC Commission of Inquiry on Torture. These commissioners were either new to the board, or were re-elected after a stint off the board.
Chapter 8 of the report describes how the Johnston County Commissioners have defended CIA-affiliated Aero Contractors, based at their airport, and refused to acknowledge their legal responsibility for the illegal human rights abuses perpetrated by Aero.
Chuck Fager of Durham, shown on the left, presented the reports. To his right are pictured Rick Hester, Johnston County Manager, and board members Tony Braswell, Chad Stewart, Ted Godwin (chair), Jeff Carver, Patrick Harris, Larry Wood, and Butch Lawter. Those who received the report because they were not serving when it was delivered on Oct. 3, 2018, were Braswell, Harris and Lawter.
