Faith and Conscience: A Call for Accountability for Torture
Thursday, May 2, 6:00-8:00 pm
Myers Park Baptist Church
1900 Queens Rd, Charlotte, NC 28207
NC’s Role in Torture: A Faith Response
Learn – Reflect – Act
The convocation will explore North Carolina’s connection, through the use of its public airports, a local airline (Aero Contractors), and locally based employees of the airline, to the CIA’s Rendition, Detention, and Interrogation (RDI) program that began after the 9/11 attacks. Muslim people were kidnapped, bound, and transported to CIA black sites and to foreign countries, where they were held indefinitely without charges and were tortured. Most were innocent of any offense.
Speakers will include NC Commission of Inquiry on Torture Commissioner Rev. Ben Boswell, as well as Christina Cowger and Allyson Caison, and NC No Torture Program Coordinator The Rev. Para Drake. They will talk about how people of faith and conscience have become involved in seeking accountability and redress for those harmed by the program and how you may encourage accountability for those actions.
