North Carolina Stop Torture Now is a grassroots coalition of individuals from a variety of backgrounds across the state, including faith, human rights, peace, veteran, and academic. We have worked since 2005 to expose and end North Carolina’s central role in the post-9/11 U.S. torture program, and to seek justice and redress for the survivors and their families.
Our special focus has been on the “torture taxis” of Aero Contractors, a CIA-affiliated aviation company headquartered at the Johnston County Airport near Raleigh. With the support of our tax dollars, Aero has played a key role in the CIA’s “extraordinary rendition” program. The CIA and Aero also used the state-run Global TransPark in Kinston as a base for secret renditions. The non-governmental NC Commission of Inquiry on Torture has identified 49 individuals whom Aero helped the CIA kidnap and transport to be tortured. We are calling on federal, state and local government officials to investigate Aero’s role in these violations and take steps toward accountability.
